Your commitment to Hire Houston Youth will create a meaningful and lasting impact on a young person, and most likely change the trajectory of his or her path in life.

Youth become better prepared to excel within their workplace of education, and, in turn, will have increased opportunities for employment and education pathways. Your company will also improve its talent pipeline and build its future workforce. By joining Mayor Turner’s Hire Houston Youth Program, your company agrees to pay a youth at least $8 an hour for at least 7 weeks of work over the summer.

Employers joining Hire Houston Youth have two pathways to fulfill their employment needs:

Participate in Hire Houston Youth Job and Resource Fairs.

The City of Houston and the McDonald’s Owners/Operators of Greater Houston will host various Job and Resource Fairs to help connect youth ages 16-24 with area employers. These events are scheduled on Saturdays from March-July and open to the public. Youth do not pre-register nor are they pre-screened.

To be eligible to participate in the Job and Resource Fairs, employers must be able to:

  • Make an offer of employment to youth at the event
  • Provide youth with the location and point of contact for the store they have been hired for

Employers are still considered if they can accommodate the above requirements but need to perform a background check for final clearance of a candidate.

Participate in Hire Houston Youth as an Employer.

Employers hiring fewer youth for more specific jobs and internships typically use our employer platform to access pre-screened candidates. Youth submit an online application for these positions between February 11 and March 23.  The next phase of the process requires youth to complete Online Job Readiness Training.  This 2-hour training is mandatory in order to be considered for an interview.  All applicants who complete the training will receive a digital badge that will become a part of their online application. Most opportunities begin on June 10 and end no sooner than August 1; however, employers are welcome to extend the period to meet their individual needs. The start date can be modified to meet your company’s summer needs.

If you’re interested in partnering with Mayor Turner this summer, all you need to do is submit your summer opportunity by creating an account in our employer platform. After joining Hire Houston Youth, companies will work with HHY staff to coordinate interviews with candidates. Employers also have the option of foregoing interviews and receiving pre-screened interns selected for their opportunity. For more information, please check out our employer toolkit.
