Joining is free of charge, we only ask that you support the Hire Houston Youth network and submit your hiring and training outcomes with HHY Leadership Team.
Frequently asked questions
Most Hire Houston Youth summer employment opportunities to begin on June 13, 2022, and end no sooner than August 5, 2022. Please keep in mind that the minimum required employment length is 8 weeks to ensure youth have a meaningful workforce experience, however, employers are welcome to extend the period as they see fit.
Employers are expected to compensate youth employees. A limited number of non-profits and community organizations will receive a subsidized HHY intern via Workforce Solutions or HHY.
The minimum pay that employers are asked to compensate youth is $10.00 per hour. The City of Houston minimum wage is $15.00 per hour. If you wish to compensate at a higher rate, you are encouraged to do so. The average pay rate for 2021 interns was $15.00 per hour.
The application is open to youth between the ages of 16 to 24 years old.
Employers can assign youth any task within their capability. There should be safety plans and programs in place, along with adequate supervision.
The youth employees will provide their own transportation. Houston METRO provides HHY youth with a full 8-weeks of METRO service free to ensure there are no barriers to employment.
Youth will be covered as employees under either the company’s worker’s compensation or general liability insurance. Intern sponsors should consult with their insurance agents to ensure the intern is covered as an employee by the carrier. HHY staff can assist in providing guidance on questions of liability.
Yes. Using the Hire Houston Youth platform, employers will be able to view applications directly and set up their own interviews.
Hire Houston Youth staff will work with liaisons to draft the employer profiles and job descriptions.
The HHY staff will be available throughout the year to provide assistance to employers, help with drafting appropriate job descriptions, solve unforeseen problems, and answer any questions you may have.
On the job posting form, you can specify the number of positions open for a particular role under “Number of Jobs Available”. This info will be provided to youth and encourage them to apply for available openings. To avoid confusion, please do not list multiple postings for the same role.
No, you are not required to hire from Hire Houston Youth. Signing up as an employer with Hire Houston Youth increases your pool of applicants and gives access to a vast collection of a trained and skilled workforce, business and nonprofit development resources, a network of public, private, and philanthropic partners, and connections to youth and communities.

Yes, absolutely! Even if you do not have job opportunities to post for this year, you can still register as an employee and join the Hire Houston Youth community.
If your organization uses other external/third-party platforms to post job opportunities, you can still sign up as an employer on Hire Houston Youth, create job listings, and attach your external/third party job posting links to the HHY listings. This will give your postings a boost in reach and give you access to our vast collection of skilled Houston youth.
Once you are logged in to the Hire Houston Youth portal, under the ‘overview” tab, you will be able to locate a report of your applicants under “Applications to My Postings”.
Once you go through each application and select your candidate(s) for the interview process, you may contact them directly via email and/or phone using the contact information listed on their applications. From this point onwards, you will begin the onboarding process as per your company policy.
